Moʿin Moṣavver | Individual Drawings and Paintings

Drawing 1674.3

Lady Reclining Against a Cushion

Location: Current whereabouts unknown
Drawing with opaque colors and gold: (H x W) 19.8 x 12.5 cm.
Signature: Signed and dated probably 1084 (?)/1674.

Inscription
At the bottom left, reads: ...[unintelligible]... šahr-e ẕu'l-qaʿda sana 1084 bejehat-e ...ba etmām [or ba ʿemlā] rasid. mašqa moʿin-e moṣavver. Translation: “Completed ... in the month of ẕu'l-qaʿda in the year 1084/9 March 1674 - 8 April 1674." The last numeral in the year is uncertain; most probably it is a 4 (1084/1674), but could also be a 6 (1086/1676) or a 9 (1089/1679). The inscription appears to be in Moʿin’s handwriting.

Description:
The drawing is executed in colors and gold and mounted to an album page. It portrays a young lady, apparently of noble upringing, seated on the ground facing left, leaning on a green cushion decorated with birds and vegetation. Her right arm is outstreched in the direction of some vessels on the ground nearby; her left arm is retracted inside her sleeve over her head. She wears an orange top with long sleeves, a blue-green skirt, and a light pink čador draped over her shoulders. A small shrub on the left, some small foliage scattered about and stylized scroll clouds in th upper right, all rendered in gold on a plain paper ground, suggest an idyllic landscape

Commentary:
This little known painting can probably be attributed to Moʿin. The signature could very well be his, and the painting is comparable to other Moʿin portraits of women, of which there are only a few known: cf. 1665.1 and 1673.3.
